The band that was always most closely tied to the old xeroxed version of Umlaut was Neurosis.The May 2007 issue of Decibel magazine had a great cover story on the band that began with the statement "Neurosis' vast impact on the history of extreme metal is undeniable."
I still find it hard to believe that Neurosis became such a hugely influential and important band; my perspective is stuff like Steve Von Till serving me my first ever vegan meal. Kinda not extreme metal.
