Only Murder Is Real

This new photo by my Murder In The Front Row co-author Harald is beyond amazing to me!  It was taken at the With Full Force Festival in Germany last week when Harald and D.R.I. shared the bill with the legend Thomas Gabriel Fischer (aka Tom G. Warrior) and his current band Triptykon.

In early 2010, I heard about a new book titled Only Death Is Real by Mr. Fischer chronicling the early days of Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. The book was being published by something called Bazillion Points in New York City and I pre-ordered it. When the book arrived I was blown away by how personal it was.. It had amazing early photos and stories AND, to my astonishment, my old early-80's Metal 'zine Whiplash was mentioned as one of the fanzines Hellhammer sent their first demo too (they did!). Surreal!

I was also gobsmacked over how similar and parallel the original Metal scene in Switzerland was to what was going on in The Bay Area at the exact same time. Teenage Metalheads in Switzerland and Teenage Metalheads in San Francisco were doppelgangers of one another! It was like looking into a time machine mirror.

The book and its production quality was so perfect I remember thinking to myself that if I ever did a book I'd like to do it with Bazillion Points. Fast forward almost a year later and I got a message from Ian Christie of Bazillion Points proposing to do a collaborative book with myself and Harald. I tried to play it cool but my mind was blown over how full circle things had become.

In the years since Ian and Bazillion published Murder In The Front Row there have been many, many other moments when I felt like this and this photo is the latest one. Metal can still be amazing and inspiring... Sometimes.

Strike Of The Beast: 15 Years Gone

Fifteen years ago today, Paul Baloff left this mortal coil at the too young age of 41. They say a picture is worth a thousand words.. so here are 2,000 words on Baloff. These photos were taken by the teenage me.  I took many photos of Exodus between 1982-85,  but these 2 images are my favorite ones of Baloff.

A Year Ago Today

Someone once said to me how The Bay Area needed to stop "holding on" to the old Murder In The Front Row days and we needed to "move on" and "get over it".  Yes, they were historic times, but that was then and this is now, and we're living in the past blah blah.  For the record, this person was not from The Bay Area.

All I can say is for me personally I am not "holding on" to those days; THEY are holding on to ME.  Over the years many things and events have happened to me as a direct result of those old Murder In The Front Row days.  I am not religious, but there is a karma / mojo thing out there.  Here's an example that happened exactly one year ago today:

At the end of October last year I received a layoff notice from a business I had been a part of for almost 10 years.  Shit happens, things were changing.  I got it and I understood the reasons... but it did not lesson the feeling of dread of "What the fuck am I going to do now??"  I've been through layoffs before and they are never easy but somehow I've always found myself landing somewhere.  The last time I was laid off I literally didn't work for a year and that memory weighed on my mind.. because how often can lightning strike?  I am not a "career" person and I've never followed any kind of defined or traditional career path.  However, sometimes the Metal Godz work in mysterious ways.

Randomly, and only a few days after my layoff notice, an old acquaintance posted something on his social media.  I had met this guy a few years before when we met about possibly doing a collaboration between his company and bands who were clients of my old company.  Unfortunately, nothing panned out but we stayed in touch over the years.

His post was about how he had found a bunch of old Punk and Metal fanzines at a local flea market and one of them caught my eye and pulled me straight back to the Murder In The Front Row days. One of the 'zines he found was a 1986 issue of the legendary San Francisco 'zine Metal Mania done by my old friend Ron Quintana.  I had contributed to Metal Mania and I have all of the issues except one... and that one issue was part of this flea market find!  The issue is Ron's tribute issue to Cliff Burton after he passed away.  Only 500 copies were xeroxed and stapled together back in those sad days after Cliff was gone.

The copy even had a Record Vault price tag on it!

Anyway, long story short, I sent my acquaintance a message and asked if he could possibly scan or copy that Metal Mania for me.  However, in true old school fashion he offered to give it to me!  WOW, right?!  No ego.  No greed.  Old school.   Also, one thing led to another and I mentioned my current job situation, which I really didn't think anything more about at the time.

Fast forward and it had only been 16 days since I received my layoff notice and I was invited to the office of my old acquaintance for lunch and (as far as I knew) to pick up the old copy of Metal Mania.  We went across the street to a place to eat and I was prepared to have a mellow conversation catching up about things... but instead the conversation was about how he wanted to bring me on board with his company.  They didn't have a specific role yet but they could work with me to figure something out.

Damn.

The gist of the conversation was that he believed shit happens for a reason.  My recent layoff, him finding that old issue of Metal Mania, and me contacting him about it felt like something was aligning.  His company was about to start growing due to new partnerships and he needed to ramp up his office staff with professional and qualified humans.  It was a fucking amazing lunch and one of those moments where my life literally changed unexpectedly.

Long story short, it took a few months for the company to be in a position to formally offer me a position.  However, in that time I was able to consult for a certain band on their webstore and I basically worked for them for a month at their Marin County HQ.  This was surreal in a full circle way and it was ironic running into The Frontman at the office and talking about Venom in front of his other employees.

Which brings me to today and it being exactly 365 days since that fateful lunch in San Francisco.  I now find myself working for an old Skate Punk and his company Super7 and our office feels like a secret club house instead of a traditional workplace.  I feel part of a gang and we're taking on the world... and we are in many ways.. and it's about to go next level for us in a good way.

As I said earlier, shit happens.  Sometimes shit happens for a reason.. and sometimes things that were put into motion 30 years ago involving bands and a local music scene can still affect my life in a very real time, modern way.. and that's exactly what happened a year ago today.  It's almost like the ghosts from the Murder In The Front Row days are looking out for me.. which is comforting in a Metal way.

Five Years Of Murder

Five years ago on this date, the pre-order for Murder In The Front Row launched on our publisher's website.

Fast forward 1,825 days later and this hardcover thing is about to go into its 3rd printing.  Crazy.

Murder has been blessed with proper distribution, and a worldwide network of friends, and has been confirmed to be on bookshelves in places like Mongolia (!), Russia, Europe, Japan, South America, China, North America, and Australia.  It's also been translated into... Bulgarian?!

As our publisher Ian Christe of Bazillion Points said awhile back, Murder kind of took on a life of its own.  Click HERE to read about the most amazing thing associated with the book for me.

It's been an interesting 5 years... with some new action in the works for the future.  If you're reading this and have a copy of the book, THANKS for the support!  It's much appreciated.

Trivia: All of the fonts used in the book are the same ones used on the Kill 'Em All, Bonded By Blood, and Hell Awaits albums.  Fonts matter.

Pimply-Faced Teenagers

Four months ago back on 4/20 (Dude!) Umlaut found himself at Metallica HQ in Marin County, California in front of a professional film crew from Spotify talking about *that band* again.  It was a long afternoon but a fun experience.  The results are launching today as a 4-part, 27 minute long documentary called Metallica: The Early Years as part of Spotify's new Landmark video series.

Take 3...

Honesty is my only excuse:  I've never used Spotify... but everyone I worked with during this project from the company were very nice and appreciative.  Spotify also licensed the use for quite a few photos from Murder In The Front Row for the film which was much appreciated by my co-author Harald and I.

So.. now whenever I see something on the Internets ranting about Spotify destroying the "music industry" or something like that I'll be conflicted and confused.  Anyway, you can watch the first episode on the Spotify Facebook page and all 4 episodes only on the Spotify mobile app (non-paying members have access to them).

Murder On The Big Screen

Friends of Murder In The Front Row -

We wanted to let you know that production has started on the Murder In The Front Row documentary film. We are working with a director and producer who have a long history and list of credits documenting music and we think they're the perfect filmmakers to tell the story about the birth of our original Bay Area Metal scene. Thanks again for all of the support you’ve given the book and we'll keep you updated as this new project progresses.

Bonded by Blood!

From earlier today: Cliff's dad Ray Burton with Murder. Mr. Burton spent time today being interviewed for the film. We are so honored he was happy to contribute his insight and stories for us.

The exciting sequel to Murder In The Library!

This is the most amazing thing I will see all year.. The National Museum of American History (aka the SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION) filmed and produced this video:

To be completely honest watching this leaves me speechless.  Umlaut has been a History Geek since I was a little kid so this is very, very special.   I guess this means we are officially part of American History, guys... like Abraham Lincoln!

Slay Team Redux

The exciting and unexpected sequel to Slay Team Comic!

"Nothing can save you now... You've learned a lesson in violence.."

Early in 1985, at around the time that the Bonded By Blood album was released, a friend of Exodus created the Slay Team comic. The story was inspired by Exodus' legendary hatred of all things poser (Ratt, Motley Crue, etc.). The comic was mainly only seen by the band's local Bay Area fans and its existence was the stuff of myth and legend.

Last year Umlaut posted what everyone believed was the only issue of the Slay Team comic.  The great irony of the Slay Team Comic and its violence was that a female member of the Exodus inner circle, Lizzy Green, was responsible for drawing and creating it.  Yes, the girls raged as hard as the dudes in the original Bay Area Metal Scene!  Bonded by blood!  Death to posers.

However, The Metal Godz work in mysterious ways and in the year since the original Slay Team comic post I miraculously got back in touch with its creator Lizzy!  The Interwebs can be a magical place sometimes.  Anyway, long story short:   Unbeknown to anyone, the teenage Metalhead Lizzy had written and created a SECOND issue of the Slay Team comic that no one else had ever seen!  Somewhere Baloff is smiling.

Now, for the first time ANYWHERE Umlaut is proud to present this long lost issue of Slay Team in its entirety.  Climb into the Umlaut time machine back to those raging days in The Bay Area when larger than life humans like Paul Baloff and Toby Rage walked the Earth.

Fun stuff, right?!  Click HERE to download a .PDF of Slay Team #2 [the file is 2.5MB].

There is also a lesson here (besides the one about violence of course):  The lesson is that even though kidz like Lizzy and Umlaut (and MANY others) listened to Metal bands like Exodus (and Slayer.. and Venom.. and Mercyful Fate.. etc. etc.) at young impressionable ages we grew up to be responsible adults who haven't murdered anybody (at least not that I know of..).  Fast forward to 2014:

Pictured here are Slay Team comic artist and creator Lizzy Green (!), Umlaut, and Lisa Holt.  Friends for over 30 years and counting!  A-MA-ZING.

No Speed Limit

Hmm... Here's an excerpt from a new interview with Mr. James Hetfield from his band's official fan club magazine So What:

I only have a vague memory of this conversation, but it's very cool that James remembered it.  Of course... then his band recorded a ballad.

Murder In The N.Y. Post

From today's New York Post gossip column:

[click for a larger image]

Next to a picture of a pregnant Kim Kardashian no less.  WTF... The Rock Godz work in mysterious ways, man.  Hopefully Donald Trump saw this and will buy a copy or a hundred since The Post called Murder a "sweet read".

I'll make it anywhere

A note for those who may be offended by the violence of this 28 year old comic:  A female member of the Exodus inner circle, Lizzy Green, was responsible for drawing and creating it.  Yes, the girls raged as hard as the dudes in the original Bay Area Metal Scene!  Bonded by blood!  Death to posers..

Murder In The Library

According to the catalog of the San Francisco Public Library there are 13 (!) copies of Murder In The Front Row available at various branches of the San Francisco library system. That's really cool, right? However, THE most mind blowing thing is a copy is part of the permanent collection of the San Francisco History Center at the Main Library! According to the History Center's website:

The Daniel E. Koshland San Francisco History Center contains a research collection of books, newspapers and magazines, photographs, maps, posters, archives and manuscript collections, and ephemera, documenting all aspects of San Francisco life and history. The Center is also the archives for the City and County of San Francisco.

In other words, Murder is part of the OFFICIAL historical archive of San Francisco and a copy is housed alongside documents and books that date back to the 1800's! Insane, right?! The fact that the curators of the History Center deemed Murder and the subject of Bay Area Metal to have legitimate historic significance for San Francisco is completely amazing.

Recently, Umlaut visited the magnificent Main Library in San Francisco and took the elevator to the 6th Floor to visit the San Francisco History Center.

The History Center is one of the "high security" areas of the library. You cannot simply browse through its collection; everything is kept behind secure areas under archival conditions and no items can leave the Center. Visitors are required to sign in and when you request to see something from the collection you also must leave an ID with the front desk.  After you make your request, you are asked to take a seat at a table, and a reference librarian brings the book to you. The librarian who brought Murder out from the archive room was wearing white archival gloves! What. The. Fuck.

"Keep the library CLEAN: No eating or drinking"

Murder Forever

In all honesty, my mind is still spinning about this. Murder In The Front Row will be a part of the official history of San Francisco long after we are gone. Discuss amongst yourselves..
