Carded

Yayy! Umlaut's 2007 jaggedness marches on!

This morning my bank left a voicemail asking me to call their fraud prevention line. There had been some "suspicious" transaction attempts made on my debit card within the past 24 hours and they wanted to verify them. They went something like this (in chronological order):
  • $1
  • $1
  • $350
  • $700
  • $600
  • $800
The $1 pings are a red flag that someone was seeing if my card number was valid; once that was confirmed they went shopping on the Information Superhighway. The final $800 transaction was an attempt to book a flight on Iran Air to Dublin, Ireland (WTF?!).

Aside from the airline tickets, the other transaction attempts were to something called Google Awards, which was listed as an advertising company. I'm sure it's linked to some kind of hacker money laundering scam, but how my check card number became involved is a mystery... I use a different card for my online porn (THAT'S A JOKE).

Thankfully, all of the transactions except one were denied by my bank's security system because the "buyer" couldn't provide the 3 digit security code from the back of the card (kudos to Wells Fargo!). However, one transaction did go through and required me to file a claim in order to have the funds returned to my account.

Also, my card was immediately deactivated so I'm living in pre-debit card 1994 again until my new card arrives. I can't remember the last time I went INSIDE a bank and filled out a withdrawal slip! Do you spell "$" with an "er" or "ar"?

Cue that Old 97's song AGAIN and a big FUCK YOU to the thieves; nice try assholes. As Umlaut types this he's listening to Sepultura - Under A Pale Grey Sky and I wanna shit fuck up!! Shit... Fuck... Up.
