Megadeth: Smith Corona Days Revisited

LESTER BANGS: "What do you type on?"
WILLIAM: "Smith Corona Galaxis Deluxe."

- From Almost Famous

In 1983, Umlaut was one of the writers / editors / publishers of a Metal zine called Whiplash, whose operations were based out of my bedroom at my parents' house. Whiplash published the very first article on Dave Mustaine's post Metallica band Megadeth (then called "Megadeath") anywhere. At the same time, I "coordinated" the Megadeth Fan Club out of my bedroom at my parents' house. My parents had no appreciation for the Heavy Metal Empire that I supervised from under their roof. I can still hear my mom ask "Why do you get so much mail?"

Click HERE for a PDF of the Megadeth article from Whiplash #1 (Fall 1983). It's an example of the Almost Famous-like writing of Umlaut before he could buy alcohol legally.

Trivia: Almost Famous is Umlaut's favorite movie because he identifies with the main character so much.

K.J. and Umlaut have been friends since before the dawn of Christianity and he's opened up his archives for this space. Old Metal Geeks and those who have seen Some Kind Of Monster might find his latest Metal artifact interesting. The rest of you can click that mouse and surf on outta here. Bye bye.

Note: I had never seen this letter before and was amused by the props Mustaine gave me for the Whiplash article.

It’s amazing what a person can come across while cleaning out the garage. This letter arrived in my mailbox during the spring of 1983. The West Coast Heavy Metal community- myself included – was still reeling from news that celebrated six-string rager Dave Mustaine had been booted from Metallica. After Kirk Hammett abruptly quit Exodus and flew to New York as Dave’s replacement, Mustaine plotted a comeback.

He apparently brandished a manual Smith Corona typewriter to painstakingly hunt-and-peck through the following pages, in an effort to explain to me the embryonic formation of Megadeth. Scribed before the dawn of Microsoft Word, Mustaine spared no expense on white-out, which was smeared liberally across each page to correct the plentiful punctuation challenges riddling his note. Observe Dave’s liberal use of commas, as well.

Hardcores from The Day should note his reference to Umlaut’s founder, who also befriended the outspoken guitar god during this pivotal career transition.

Dear K.J.,

Well, this is the first, and, only chance you have to hear the real story behind the kicking out part of the Metallica story. I don’t know exactly the time those guys decided to get rid of me, but, they couldn’t of picked a better time. It’s real funny how they could lie to me, all that time from Indiana to New York, and, that was a long time! I guess that the fact that I kicked some guys ass in some alley in S.F., had some kind of unforgettable point of interest, because after that happened, they never gave me any kind of trouble, and, the respect that I had, as far as being able to take care of myself, was not questioned. The new band is a lot heavier than Metallica, because, as you know, I wrote the four of the best songs that we had, The Mechanics, Jump in the Fire, Metal Militia, and, the Phantom Lord, and, those were the songs that got the most recognition out of all the songs that we played. But, then I guess you know all that. Well, as far as the new band goes, it’s real heavy, as heavy as you’ll find that’s for sure. I really hope that you like what you hear, as it’s going to be the new, “Megadeth”/’Naipon’ demo tape will be out in the near future, and you can count on being one of the first one’s to hear it. I sincerely think that the stuff hat I’ve put together, is going to go over real good, because it’s so fucking heavy! I was really let down, by myself, because I thought that there was going to be some mail that said that, some people were inquiring, as to the disappearing act that I pulled in the East Coast. I wish that those guys could have had the balls to tell me that I was fucking up, and, not wait till the last minute…

As far as the story that Brian wrote… there couldn’t have been a better beginning to a band’s intro tape than what he wrote, and, the only fucked thing about it, is that were not using that name any more. The new band name is Megadeth, and, the people that are in the band, are myself, on lead guitar, David Ellefson on bass, Gregg Handevidt on rhythm guitar, Lor Kain on vocal and, Richard Girod, on drumming detail. The songs are, “No Time;” “Eye for Eye”, “Speak No Evil,” “When Hell Freezes Over,” “The Gambler,” “Head Lock,” “You Know Where to Go,” and, “Chose Your Master.” The band consists of a four piece rhythm section that deals out nothing but, the heavy, heavy stuff. Me, and, all the boys, all fill the parts where theres supposed to be singing, with total guitars, and, bass, and, the vocals, well, if we keep the guy that we have right not then we will really have to keep our eyes on this guy, per, he consumes quite a large amount of drugs. Though the fact that he sounds like Satan himself, and, that he can really scream, but, how much screaming can someone take?

So that’s the fact why we’re still looking for vocals. But, the main section of the band, is here, and, not only did I learn how to use eight fingers, on the neck, but I also, learned how to us my thumbs!

And, the possibility of using anything else that I have. Well, the music is just as, if not heavier than the stuff that I was doing in Metallica, since the fact that the heavy shit was mine. It kind of shows you where the direction of this act is headed. Well that’s it for this time, and, keep the people that want the heaviest, in mind for the mailing list of Megadeth, I was thinking of you heading the fan club section for me, because I’ve already got the merch end of it, and, the mailing taken care of, so, if you could possibly, next tine that you send out somekind of fanzine put some thing in for old Dave, since I could sure use the help these first few times, and, then when I get something out in the listenable scene then you can call me a jerk if it doesn’t strike you as real metal. Well that’s all for this time, tell anyone concerned that David Mustain has not been silenced, and, the vengence can be smelt.

Although both Umlaut and Drunk Ted were Old Metal in the early-80's (me in NorCal, he in SoCal), we would not become friends until The Grunge Age when he wrote for the legendary Flipside. Although Whiplash had a major distributor (Dutch East India in NYC) I have heard very few stories from people who actually bought it outside of the S.F. Bay Area.

Submitted by Drunk Ted:

Great Whiplash retrospective! Man, that brought back memories! I remember the day I picked up that magazine. I picked it up for the Raven & Venom (among others) interviews and got turned on to Metallica & Megadeth. (I think that's how I got turned onto Metallica... maybe not. It's definitely the first Metallica interview I've ever read. Unless Metal Forces beat you to one. Don't think so though.) I still remember ordering the live Trouble cassette through the ad you had in there. Took it to school and some girl ripped on me for listening to "Devil worshiping music". HA HA!

As if to celebrate the season, Bauhaus are back on tour after 7 years. I'm sure alot of the local Goth Kidz spent their meth money on tickets for all 3 S.F. shows (including a Halloween shindig at The Fillmore), but one night of Goth was enough for Umlaut:

Bauhaus
The Warfield, San Francisco
October 26, 2005

Umlaut blew off the 1998 Bauhaus reunion tour and regretted it afterwards. It seems like alot of folks go through a "Bauhaus phase" during their formative years. Umlaut's "Bauhaus phase" was when I was a hungover English / Lit Major in the mid-80's. Baudelaire 'N Bauhaus. I was so fucking *deep* and reeking of LI-TER-RAH-CHA. I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

You'll NEVER guess what color most of the crowd was wearing.... NOPE! It was BLACK. However, I committed a major Rock fashion faux pas by wearing a Who t-shirt to the show. Obviously, I had inadvertently aligned myself with The Mods, but no Brighton-style fisticuffs erupted. Thankfully, like North and South Korea, the uneasy truce between Mods and Goths remains intact.

Something else that wasn't very Goth was The Sheriff & Friends telling Umlaut about a fantastic new restaurant (Medicine on Sutter St.). No matter, Umlaut will dine there soon and will wear BLACK. That being said, have you noticed that most Goth musicians seem to age better than Southern Rock musicians? Discuss amongst yourselves.

The opening shot of Burning From The Inside > In The Flat Field made me want to break out the black lipstick. The band was amazingly tight and sounded phenomenal. I was completely locked into Daniel Ash and David J.'s musicianship. Damn if Daniel Ash isn't my new Guitar God after all these years.

It was cool to see the original Bauhaus lineup onstage with the original Love & Rockets lineup and 2/3 of Tones On Tail. I wonder how many smartass hipsters shouted out "Kundalini Express!" during the show. Leather jackets with the Love & Rockets Express artwork painted on the back = 1.

She's In Parties set off a frothy Goth frenzy that was made more entertaining by a trio of Goth girls on the main floor singing along, complete with Goth hand gestures. It's in the can. During the storming encore of Bela Lugosi's Dead > Slice Of Life > Telegram Sam > Ziggy Stardust I had a brief but very profound flashback of being 25-years old again. I was so fucking *deep* and reeking of LI-TER-RAH-CHA back then. However, I wasn't happy like I am now. I love when music reminds you to have perspective like that. I am your slice of life.

This was my 29th concert this year and I'm 5 behind my pace from this same time last year. I must be getting old. If you bought one of every Bauhaus merch item you would have paid $190. On the way back to the car, some pimply-faced teenagers called me a fag. A girl on the main floor had a bright red mohawk and a boy had a bright purple mohawk. Too bad they weren't together.

Since Halloween comes but once a year, Umlaut should recount the Halloween gigs he's seen over the years:

Y&T / Motley Crue - Concord Pavilion, Concord, CA - Halloween 1982 - This was a couple of years before Y&T started wearing stupid stage clothes and writing stupid songs. I hated Motley Crue. My friends hated Motley Crue. We had front row seats and were flipping the Crue off as soon as they hit the stage. After several songs, Nikki Sixx stopped trying to win us over and flipped us off and challenged one (or all of us) to come onstage. None of us were that stupid. We continued to flip him off until one of their roadies came over and told us to stop or we'd be kicked out! What the fuck?! I still hate Motley Crue.

Metallica - The Keystone, Palo Alto, CA - Halloween 1983 - The show was sponsored by local Rock radio station KOME (R.I.P.) and a DJ hosted a lame costume contest. Cliff Burton (R.I.P.) watched it from the side of the stage. At the conclusion of Metallica's set, S.F. major rager Rich Birch (R.I.P.) came onstage with a sledgehammer ala the cover of the Kill 'Em All album (Pic by Umlaut). A classic moment. Old Metalheads will remember Rich's quote that was immortalized on the back cover of Kill 'Em All.

Sonic Youth - The Warfield, S.F. - Halloween 1990 - The band came onstage in costume. Kim was dressed in a tight catsuit. Thurston was a mummy. I can't remember how Steve and Lee were costumed. Thurston's costume was simply toilet paper wrapped around his head and street clothes. He started spinning around and around during a solo and the paper started unraveling off him. It looked cool. The lobby of The Warfield was filled with dry ice before the show and the inside was decorated for the occasion. They even handed out souvenir buttons at the door.

The Mummies - The Chameleon, S.F. - Halloween 1991 - The Mummies in The Mission on All Hallow's Eve! While making my way to the gig there was a mini-van on Mission St. that had obviously stopped for a traffic light when something went terribly wrong. It was abandoned in the middle of the street and all of its tires were slashed and all of the windows had been smashed. TRICK! The Mummies ruled.

The Cramps - Bimbo's, S.F. - Halloween 1993 - They were billed as The Creatures from the Black Leather Lagoon (HA HA). A guy in the crowd was in costume as a giant can of beer. The costume was made out of cardboard and at one point he jumped into the pit and started dancing / thrashing around. The band even took notice of the giant dancing / thrashing can of beer as they played. A few moments later there was a small eruption in the crowd and the cardboard came flying up in the air and landed on the stage at Lux's feet. I didn't see what happened to the guy. Twas one of the funniest things I've ever seen at a show.

The Strokes / Mooney Suzuki - Bill Graham Civic, S.F. - Halloween 2001 - Miatomic and Umlaut made fun of Mooney Suzuki (for good reason). The Strokes played their hits. We sat next to Electra Woman but the dominant costume seemed to be Aloof Scenester with cigarette.

Trivia: Umlaut has dressed in drag twice for Halloween. Once as Yoko Ono and another time as a Flight Attendant (complete with fishnet stockings and makeup). Yes, there are pictures. No, you can't see them.

God's Shitty Birthday Gifts

Tomorrow is Umlaut's birthday. As I left the house for work this morning, these were ironically caught on a shrub in the front yard:

Only God would give Umlaut such a randomly lame birthday gift. The last time God sent me something this shitty for my birthday was 16 years ago on this same date:

Three Dirty Green Days

October 11-13, 2005

Dirty Three are a band who I have alot of history with, but only from a Music Geek's perspective. I've met them casually at shows, but never hung out with them. I've admired them from afar for 10 years now.

Ten years?! It always trips me out when they hit town every 2-3 years.. It's a mindfuck to realize how time can fly by so quickly... (cue swirly time travel whirlpool visual thing)...

Bottom of the Hill, S.F. 1995 - I had seen the band for the first time the night before opening for Morphine at The Fillmore. I had been wanting to see them ever since I read an NME review where Nick Cave had joined the band onstage in London.

When we arrived I saw a friend named Jason standing by himself. Jason worked at Kinko's and was an early fan of Umlaut when it was a xeroxed 'zine. Old School Zine People will appreciate this: Friend at Kinko's = BIG savings bordering on (or equal to) outright theft of copies. I'm admitting to nothing, only stating heresay..

Long story short: As I approached Jason I didn't know he was secretly taping the band.. At the very beginning of the recording you can here him say "Hey man.." to someone. That someone is me.

Jason has since passed away and I've always liked the bootleg of this show since it not only captured the band, but also briefly archives Jason's voice.

Bimbo's, S.F. 1997 - I was checking out the merch table and not paying attention to anyone. Out of the blue the merch guy said "Hey [Umlaut's Real World Name]!" It was a guy named Brian who I'd met several years earlier when Umlaut went on tour with Neurosis / 7 Year Bitch. At that time he was an A&R guy for Capitol.. Now he was Dirty Three's Tour Manager. Crazy small world. D3 performed an astounding instrumental version of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". They've never properly recorded it. Thank Dog for bootlegs.

Click HERE for a PDF of Umlaut On Tour With Neurosis / 7 Year Bitch from Umlaut #9 (Fall 1993)!

Great American Music Hall, S.F. - 1998 - The Melvins played a secret show across town at the C.W. Saloon (R.I.P.) that same evening. Dirty Three's then-tour manager Brian took a cab to see the Melvins before heading back to the Great American for the D3 show. Twas one of those rare doubleshot nights that don't happen nearly as often anymore (at least for Umlaut).

Royal Festival Hall, London, England - 1999 - D3 supported Nick Cave solo on the same stage that the London Symphony calls home. At the typically bombastic conclusion of "Sue's Last Ride" Warren lost his grip on his violin bow and it went flying across the stage. I'm sure most of the crowd thought it was part of the show. An epic performance.

Great American Music Hall, S.F. - 2000 - Prior to the gig I had a major D3 Geek outburst and put together a package to give to the band. At the show I spotted guitarist Mick Turner, introduced myself, and gave him a large padded envelope. Inside were bootlegs of every show they had played in S.F. up until then, including their 1995 debut opening for Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 (which was also the band's first ever show in America). I asked for nothing in return. I thought that was a cool fanboy gesture.

Great American Music Hall, S.F. - 2003 - The gig was around a month after I'd been laid off from a job that I loved. Oddly, I was going through emotions that I hadn't felt since a girlfriend dumped me years ago... It was a weird time for me. D3 were touring with the bass player from Low, which added a new dimension to their sound. At one point I had my eyes closed, just soaking in the music, and when I opened them and looked around I realized that practically everyone around me had their eyes closed and were locked into the music too. It was amazing. This is my favorite D3 show simply because of the healing power it had for me during a rough time in my life.

Which brings y'all up to date:

Dirty Three
Great American Music Hall, San Francisco
Oct. 11, 2005

It was appropriate that exactly a week before my 42nd Birthday I should watch D3 perform "Sue's Last Ride" again. Why? Because 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything... and "Sue's Last Ride" is the most inspiring and life affirming song ever written about someone dying in the backseat of a car IMO.

I realized that this was the first D3 show since 1995 where I didn't know most of the songs being performed... The new album was released that day but I was a poser and didn't camp out at the local indie record store that morning. I must be getting old.

D3 were touring with an additional musician who played a 2nd violin (!), mandolin, and bass on some songs. Seeing D3 with a 2nd violin was like seeing Iron Maiden's 3-guitar lineup for the first time. Of all the times I've seen D3, this show seemed "off" for some reason. Warren's usual fiery onstage joviality seemed muted.. BUT the music was still there. I thought drummer Jim White was the star of this show. He held things DOWN and I found myself locking into his performance more than Warren's violin this time 'round. Hmmm.

"Everything's Fucked" is still THE quintessential "everything is fucked" song IMO.. and "Hope" still gets me "right here". D3 is pure, uncut music.. No bullshit lyrics to get in the way.

Another thing I dig about D3 is that since 1998 they've produced inexpensive tour CDs (featuring unreleased or live tracks) that are only sold at shows. Music Geeks LOVE that kinda shit. The excellent 2005 Tour CD cost a mere $8 and features a live recording done in their native Australia last year.

The 2005 Tour CD (Live @ The Meredith Festival)

If you've never heard Dirty Three, listen to their song "I Really Should've Gone Out Last Night" and it will make you realize that, yeah, you really should have.

If you bought one of every Dirty Three merch item you would have spent $78. On the way back to the car, some pimply-faced teenagers called me a fag. I've always said that Dirty Three are the only band I've ever seen with feedback screaming from a violin.. and damn if I don't still love 'em for that.

Okay.. Now this:

Green Day / The Network
Warfield Theater, San Francisco
Oct. 13, 2005

I'll say it for you: "GREEN DAY AGAIN?? " Arguably the biggest Rock band in the world playing a show that was basically the same size as the guest list for their massive PacBell Park show several weeks back. An intimate hometown gig with the band performing the American Idiot album in its entirety. Just like The Who performing Tommy in London circa 1969.

There was so much drama surrounding tickets for this silly Rock Show. There was a frenzy in the air. Tickets went onsale 3 days prior to the show via Ticketbastard online only. I think it sold out in less than 5 minutes. Evidently someone paid $3,200 for a pair of tickets on Ebay (!). Meanwhile, more than a few were paying over $300 each (around 7x face value) for their tickets via Ebay and Craigslist.

For 72 hours this piece of paper was worth $$. Now it makes a perfect bookmark..

With that in mind, NEVER take Karma for granted. Umlaut ain't a hippie, but from past experience I've learned that Karma and the Rock Godz do indeed walk hand in hand. Things came together, fell apart, came together, staggered, and then completely came back together. Cue Pyro.

Naturally, I was sitting next to one of those chatty know-it-all concert guys who had to tell me about ALL of the shows he'd ever seen at The Warfield ("Man.. I saw the Dead here.. oh and I saw Marilyn Manson here... blah blah blah.."). Dude, I don't CARE.. I saw Mercyful Fate at The Warfield but you don't hear me blabbing about it. I ended up ignoring him and drank codeine with Skychick.

I'll just come right out and say that The Network are Green Day in disguise.. I dig their 80's New Wave thang alot... BUT they had more smoke machines going than both the Sisters Of Mercy and Jesus & Mary Chain combined.. Twas completely ridiculous actually. After watching most of the set, the smoke caused Skychick and I to retreat to the lobby for some air and more codeine.

HOLY FUCK. Green Day played for 3 hours! I am not exaggerating. A setlist of almost 40 songs. They didn't get around to playing "Basket Case" until 12:05am and they didn't even bother playing their biggest hit ("Good Riddance"). We stumbled out to the sidewalk at around 12:45am and the 7-11 across Market St. from The Warfield was mobbed by dehydrated fans.

I won't even to try to explain how mindblowing the show was... Words simply can't do it justice. Besides, if you're one of those people who still dismisses Green Day it doesn't matter anyway. I will simply say that this show was everything that I love about music and why it's such a huge part of my life. F-U-N. 'Nuff said.

The Encore 2 set was basically unscripted.. Songs were either requested from the audience or shouted out by various band members on the fly. It was like watching arguably the biggest Rock band in the world in their rehearsal space. Combined with The Network set, the lads were onstage for at least 4 hours solid. Twas fucking amazing to behold.

Also, Umlaut has been seeing shows at The Warfield for over 20 years and I've NEVER seen as much pryo used on that stage. Green Day likes to blow things up.

Best Quote: Old Metal Erik to Umlaut the next day - "I worked at The Warfield for 8 years, and I've never seen anyone get away with that much pyro before."

Due to the ticket situation, unlike the other GD shows Umlaut has seen on this tour, the crowd was mainly adults instead of kidz. However, the kidz were there in quality instead of quantity..

Halfway through American Idiot (the first song..) Billie Joe was at the front of the stage and pointed to someone in the front row (while the song was still being played) and said something like "Your dad is having a hard time keeping people from crushing you.. I'll make a deal with you.. You can come up here and watch the show from over there.." and pointed to the side of the stage..

Security then pulled 2 preteen girls out of the crowd... and they watched the entire show from the side of the stage. They were stunned... but as the show went on they sang along to EVERY song.. They were wearing matching pink Green Day shirts.

As the show progressed I noticed that the crew kept giving them things... like a bottle of water and Tre's drum sticks.. Before any pyro went off a crew guy would lean down and tell them to cover their ears.

If you can't appreciate how cool that whole interaction was then all I can say is there are crap bands like Disturbed or Staind as you mope through life. Anger is an energy... I suppose.

Before the show, Tour Manager Doug (TMD) and Umlaut told Billie Joe's brother about seeing Motorhead with Krokus at The Warfield in 1983. He seemed impressed. Having grown up in the S.F. Bay Area I gotta say that when GD launched into "Homecoming" I was filled with civic pride for the local boys made good. It made up for the Niners being such a shit team this season..

For the final time in 2005, cheers to old Umlaut friend TMD for the +1 into his All Access Pass World. Umlaut still lives vicariously through his Rock 'N Roll Lifestyle. Keep it real out there, for The Kidz.

Scorpions - In Trance shirts seen = 1 (!!). On the way back to the car, some pimply-faced teenagers called us fags. I can't remember the last time the Old School Music Geeks were so unabashedly giddy after a show. Good times.. ain't we lucky we got 'em?

Cliff Notes

This one is for all of the Old Metal Music Geeks.

Umlaut has known K.J. since before the Dawn of Christianity. Between 1983-87 K.J. ran the Official Metallica Fan Club. Click HERE to see what he's up to now.

Submitted by K.J.

This is the first thing Cliff Burton ever wrote for the original Metallica Fan Club, back in the Summer of 1983. It ran in the first club newsletter - an equipment rundown printed alongside those from band mates Hetfield, Hammett, and Ulrich.

(From the K.J. Archives)

"Right now, I'm using a Randall 300 watt head into: 1 Randall 1 x 18 cab and 1 road 2 x 18 cab."

"At this time I only use 2 effects. A Morley Power Ultra Boost and an MXR Limiter."

"I play a Rickenbacker 4001 bass. The 2 stock pickups have been replaced as follows: In the bass position there's a "Gibson EB" pickup. In the treble position, there's a "Seymore Duncan Stacked Jazz" pickup. I have also had a 3rd pickup installed in the bridge. It's a "Seymore Duncan Stacked Strat." Both Duncan pickups are "Humbucking" in design so they help reduce unwanted noise."

22 Years Ago Today

October 5, 1983... San Jose Civic... DIO... Holy Diver Tour.

Vivian Campbell & Jimmy Bain of Dio

This is the only good shot I got because I was crushed against the stage (there was no barrier). Dio played 2 sold out shows on the same day due to the ticket demand (an early and a late show - 3,000 at each).

Besides Ronnie James, the other major draw for us was guitarist Vivian Campbell, who previously had been in the underground English Metal band Sweet Savage (Metallica covered the Sweet Savage song "Killing Time" on an early demo and later as a b-side in 1991). In 1987, Campbell left Dio and has since made a career of playing with crap bands such as Whitesnake and Def Leppard.

Opening the show were the fledgling Northwest Metal band Queensryche, who only had a 5-song EP out at the time. Note: 2/5 of their EP were songs about women ("Queen Of The Reich" and "The Lady Wore Black"..) and the other 3/5 were songs about a night demon thing, a sword of light thing, and a prophecy thing ("Nightrider", "Blinded", and "Prophecy") .

The King Biscuit Flower Hour [click for link] taped the San Jose shows and aired around 30 minutes of Dio and maybe 15 minutes of Queensryche. At one point Dio said "You're the best audience we've ever played for..." which was kinda cool since the band had only played around 20 shows up to that point in time.. Of course, The Elf could have just been saying that.

Before the show I ran into Cliff Burton of Metallica. He was with Jim Martin (later of Faith No More). They offered me a beer from their 12 pack. Metallica's debut U.S. Tour had ended only a month before, but Cliff wasn't recognized by the Metal Kidz.

September

SEPTEMBER SONGS:
  • September Gurls - Big Star
  • Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day
  • The September Of My Years - Frank Sinatra
  • September Song - Kurt Weill (Lou Reed's version)
SEPTEMBER HOME:

Battlestar Galactica - Season One DVD - The new version of Battlestar has little resemblance to the cheesy 70's show. The new Battlestar is THE best SciFi show... EVER. I shit you not.

Cheap Trick - In Color (Albini Session) CD - The unreleased 1997 re-recording of the In Color album with Steve Albini turning the knobs. The songs have more bite than the 1977 versions and it made me a Cheap Trick fan all over again, for the first time. RAW. POWER. POP. Music Geek Moment: At the conclusion of "Oh Caroline" when Rick Nielsen throws in the riff from The Yardbirds' "Heart Full Of Stone".

Devo - Live 1980 DualDisc DVD / CD - Filmed and recorded at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA on 8/17/80. The spud onslaught of Uncontrollable Urge > Mongoloid > Be Stiff > Gates Of Steel > Freedom Of Choice is pretty damn great. Trivia: This very show was Tour Manager Doug's 1st concert..

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (The Bootleg Series Vol. 7) - Man, I'll never go see Dylan live again, but I can listen to this stuff forever. Listen to the likes of "Visions Of Johanna" and "Desolation Row" and you'll realize that Techno music you listen to is gutless.

Iron Maiden - 1983 Fan Club Magazine Issues - I didn't have the money to join the Maiden F.C. back in The Day.. But a mere $10 on Ebay allowed me to live the magic 23 years later.

The Rebirth of Casa de Umlaut's Front Yard - Skychick works her magic over the Earth.. She can also communicate with animals.

SEPTEMBER AWAY:

S.F. Botanical Garden Society - Monthly Plant Sale - Sept. 10th - Umlaut was wearing a Motorhead shirt and a woman wearing a Care Bears shirt exclaimed "MOTORHEAD?!" in a "That's the last thing I thought I'd see here" way. Umlaut digs 7" import singles with picture sleeves. Skychick digs Native California drought resistant plants. Somehow it works.

Oasis / Jet / Kasabian - Shoreline Amphitheater, Mt. View, CA - Sept. 11th - This event marked a spike in Umlaut's Music Geek year since he saw 3 of his favorite bands within a month of each other (Iron Maiden, Dinosaur Jr., and Oasis).

I'm not even going to bother explaining why I dig Oasis. To quote Tour Manager Doug: "OASIS??" It reminds me of the reaction Metalhead friends gave me in 1985 when I said I liked "Fade To Black" (Metallica's blasphemous 1st ballad).

Oh yeah, Umlaut also likes Jet (I can hear those mouse clicks as disgusted readers move on to another web site..). For the record, despite what some Cool Kid Critics say, just because Jet are from Australia doesn't make them an AC/DC clone. In reality, Jet are more like a Humble Pie clone. Cool Kid Critics who don't know their Rock History annoy the fuck outta me.

At the bar, Umlaut, Skychick, and Miatomic discussed the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica.. Could it get more pathetic?! It's all in your perspective I guess.. Dyaknowwhatimean?

Despite the fact that this was Oasis' first S.F. Bay Area show in 5 years, I was expecting a small crowd.. Mainly because their Yank audience has become more "selective" (to quote Spinal Tap's manager Ian Faith).. However, Shoreline's reserved section was filled with Anglophiles and British ex-pats.

Oasis are better live than Venom ever were.

Of course, we were sitting behind THE biggest Oasis fanboy.. The guy air drummed and air guitared the entire show.. However, he wasn't annoying since watching someone air guitar to Oasis is not something you see every day. Dyaknowwhatimean?

Cheers to the Sheriff for the leg-up. If you bought one of every Oasis merch item you would have spent around $290 (I think). On the way back to the car, some pimply-faced teenagers called us fags. For those who care, they played "Acquiesce"! I'm still mad for it.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Great American Music Hall, S.F. - Sept. 12th - Supposedly this show was oversold by a substantial amount... However, at showtime the place didn't seem that crowded, so perhaps time portal technology was utilized to solve the crowd vs. space conundrum. Then again, maybe not.

I don't know... Four years ago I was fanatical about this band.. Truth be told, they lost me with their recent 21st Century neo folk album.. BRMC have always walked a thin line between clever and pretentious.. and IMO they've tripped over to the latter.

Opening the set with 8 (EIGHT) of the new songs before playing a familiar old song did nothing to change my mind. When they did launch into that 9th song of the set, the old tune ("Punk Song") was a slap to my face that screamed "OH YEAH! THIS is the band I like..." Fuzzy 'N Loud.

If BRMC were a person it would be a 20-year old English major who just read Ginsberg for the first time. Oh well... Part of being a Music Geek is having bands let you down. I saw the best minds of my generation blah blah blah.

If you bought one of each BRMC merch item you would have spent around $260. On the way back to the car, some pimply-faced teenagers called us fags. I can't decide if BRMC is better live than Venom were... It's too close to call.

The Rambler 12-Hour Composition - S.F. - Sept. 22nd - Dude, The Rambler was like Pink Floyd Live @ Pompeii, only on wheels... but... Umlaut didn't go as planned. Blame Miatomic for scheduling a dinner party that evening.

Green Day - PacBell Park, S.F. - Sept. 24th - The last time Umlaut saw a band 4x on the same tour was during his Darkness Obsession. The Cool Kidz will always dismiss Green Day, but Umlaut loves 'em. Green Day has also been a convenient excuse to stalk Tour Manager Doug around the globe over the past year.

I thought I'd be a smartass and be the most Metal person by wearing an Iron Maiden shirt to the show.. However, I was quickly put in my place by the guy walking in front of us as we approached the stadium who was wearing a DIO jacket. In my head, Dio sang "You're the last in line!" and pointed the Devil sign at me.

When you've been in this Music Geek game as long as Umlaut, sometimes the world is *this* small. Case in point: The first band on was Flogging Molly with one Dave King on vocals.. In the early 80's King was in a band called Fastway with Fast Eddie Clarke of Motorhead and Pete Way of UFO. Umlaut saw Fastway open for Iron Maiden in 1983. Shock and awe.

As with any Big Rock Show, getting to the VIP Area was an adventure. I would like to state for the record that the guys working PacBell's "VIP" elevators were all smartasses. It must fuck with your head riding up and down in an elevator for a living.

Umlaut, Skychick, and Miatomic discussed the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica.. Could it get more pathetic?! It's all in your perspective I guess.. Dyaknowwhatimean?

I would like to state for the record that Green Day did their VIP Room the right way compared to another band whose name rhymes with Metallica. I also ran into more Old Metal people at this show than at the last Metallica show I attended. WWLD (What Would Lars Do)?

Best Quote: Hanes Beefy-T. to Umlaut the next day - "People sure abused the open bar."

They threw in a cover of Journey's "Lights" that made me laugh out loud.. For the number crunchers: Twas the highest paid attendance for any event at PacBell (inc. the Stones, Springsteen, and World Series games).. over 42,000. At least there's still one Rock band that can still fill a stadium and put on a proper show. One word: PYRO. THE best Pyro show I've seen since KISS... maybe even better.

Green Day are WAY better live than Venom ever were.

If you bought one of every Green Day merch item you would have paid $690 for 31 different items. On the way back to the car, some pimply-faced teenagers called us fags. During the After Show backstage action, Miatomic was hit on by an extremely creepy older guy. The Summer of Love is over, dude!

Green Day - Arco Arena, Sacramento, CA - Sept. 30th - Unintentionally, Green Day's American Idiot Tour turned into one of Umlaut's biggest Music Geek adventures... San Francisco > Amsterdam > London > San Francisco > Sacramento... but alas, all things must come to an end.

I know what you're saying: "Green Day AGAIN??".. But when an old friend like Tour Manager Doug (TMD) ends up with the biggest Rock band on the planet you gotta take advantage and embrace the concept of Carpe Diem. It seems like only yesterday that TMD and Umlaut were standing on a table at The Mabuhay Gardens in S.F. watching an out of control Metallica show (see below).

What's the difference in seeing shows in Sacramento vs. S.F.? Outside it was still 90 degrees at 7:00pm in Sac... Central Valley gridlock traffic.. The arena parking was $15 cheaper in Sac. The frightened looking Sacramento soccer moms escorting their teenage daughters to the scary Big Rock Show.

As Timo and I settled into our excellent seats next to the soundboard, I made eye contact with an old familiar face standing next to the board wearing a Discharge shirt.. and the following ensued:

Best Quote: Dave Ed of Neurosis (so loudly that heads turned) - "IS THAT [Umlaut's Real World Name]?!"

We both were like "Uhhh, what are YOU doing here??" Umlaut went on tour with Neurosis a couple of times back in The Day. We both probably felt that our MaximumRockNRoll cred was blown by being seen at the show (Trivia: Neurosis played with Green Day at Gilman St.).

However, if anyone asks, we both had valid excuses for being there: Me = Tour Manager Doug. Dave Ed = Members of the band. Or as Discharge sang "Hear nothing, see nothing, say nothing.."

Click HERE for a PDF of Umlaut On Tour With Neurosis from Umlaut #4 (Spring 1992)!

Jason, Green Day's 2nd guitarist, plays a Brian May model guitar onstage during their cover of "We Are The Champions". It is so obvious that Green Day are no longer a Punk band! If they were still Punk (or Punx), Jason would be playing a Mosrite during a Ramones cover or a Dan Armstrong during a Black Flag cover. So, all of you MaximumRockNRoll traditionalists can declare victory and continue to do whatever it is you do now that you can buy your Punk uniform gear and accessories at Hot Topic in Any Mall, U.S.A.

Misfits shirts = 1. I was amused by the "Too Cool For The School" Punx sitting to our left. The lads had "the right" look (the right haircuts, pegged jeans, Creepers, etc.) as did their girlfriends (standard Hot Topic fishnet girly Punk attire). The lads were obviously in a band since they wore matching Dickies jackets with the band's name screened on the back (The Phenomenauts). As they stared at the Big Rock Show, I could imagine them thinking "That SHOULD be US up there..." I should check 'em out.

On the way back to the car, some pimply-faced teenagers called us fags. Umlaut Trivia: The last time Umlaut was at Arco Arena was in January, 1992 for a Metallica show. It was in this very parking lot that some pimply-faced teenagers really did call me a fag... and thus a catchphrase was born. So now you know!

This road trip was capped off at midnight in a Vacaville Denny's by a 2 Egg Breakfast and a beer ("The Umlaut Classic" as Timo calls it). As we were leaving, 4 Jocks were being seated.. All of them were still wearing their Green Day backstage passes to show them off and one of them excitedly said "I'm never taking mine off!" AWW.. Even Jocks have a Geek side.

On the way home, there was a 5 car accident just outside of the arena parking lot.. and as we approached the Albany / Berkeley border there was a scary accident involving a car and a UPS tractor-trailer. The contents of the car were strewn across all lanes of Hwy 580. Livin' after midnight, Rockin' til the dawn.

Cheers once again to old Umlaut friend TMD for the hospitality and +1 into his All Access Pass World. Umlaut still lives vicariously through his Rock 'N Roll Lifestyle. Keep it real out there, for The Kidz.

REMEMBER, WHATEVER.. IT FEELS LIKE FOREVER AGO:

The year was 1984.. Ronald Wilson Reagan (666) was in the White House. A young Kevin Bacon and Footloose enchanted the nation. Meanwhile:

Metallica had just returned from their debut European Tour and played a "secret" show at The Fab Mab. Umlaut took this pic while standing on a table. Tour Manager Doug was standing on the table next to him.
